Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights

HIGHLIGHTS as of July 1, 2010

In August, Alaska voters approved a ballot initiative requiring that a parent be notified 48 hours before a minor obtains an abortion. The state’s existing parental consent law is not in effect due to a court decision. The initiative, which includes exceptions for abuse and medical emergencies, and a process for minors to obtain a judicial waiver from the notification requirement, is expected to go into effect in November. Alaska will be the 11th state to have such requirements.
